So Hiro is a super genius with an Aunt he loves, a cafe that he lives above, and an absolute hatred of boredom. So he totally knows how to cook. He's perfectly fine eating junk and prefers it, and letting him INVENT recipes is a mistake, but he knows how to make the cafe's menu effectively. So he knows cafe food and various baked goods.

Break Down
-Tadashi regularly works later.
-His professor is visiting.
-...there is a college professor here and I am sucking on a lollipop.
-Nope, not a kid, not here.
-Tadashi had told him that Hiro is a bot fighter.
-Professor's daughter wanted to be one too.
-Unsure, but....if Tadashi likes him that much, he can probably be trusted with Megabot.
-Oh, he can recognize magnetic bearing servos?

Robert Callaghan is SUPER AWESOME COOL FATHER OF ROBOTICS DUDE.
Also a professor Tadashi is close enough to recruit into manipulating Hiro, which is also kind of cool.
But that certainly explains why he went from 'FUCK COLLEGE' to 'YES TO ALL THE COLLEGE PLEASE.' Which does bring up the question for why he decided to....not go???? For some reason??? It's weird?
